How to Draw Guile from Street Fighter Step by Step.
Introduction: Today on How to Draw Manga we're going to be drawing Guile from Street Fighter. We've already done a tutorial on Ryu which you can check out here, another character from Street Fighter 2, so after you've tried Guile you might want to take a look at that one too. Guile is one of my 3 most favorite characters from Street Fighter. A true badass.
While researching for this tutorial I found some interesting trivia. Did you know that early official artwork shows Guile having only one tattoo, though in-game, due to the character's sprites' left and right sprites being mirrored, he has them on both sides. In later years after this was noticed, the artwork shows him with tattoos on both shoulders.
Step 1: We'll begin, as always, by using blue construction lines for all of our shapes. Just remember that we'll be erasing them later so if you're using a pencil and paper don't press too hard as when you erase them you might damage your paper. Let's start with a simple potato-like shape for the head. Be sure to leave plenty of space around for Guile's hair and neck, they are about twice the size of his actual head.
Step 2: This next step is an easy one too. We'll draw the center line for the face near the right edge of the potato shape extending down which will help us to draw other features in next steps.
Step 3: Next, from the bottom of the center line we'll draw his draw line in three turns as you can see above. Start at the bottom of center line and finish to the left of the center of the potato shape.
Step 4: We'll need to keep working on construction lines for a while yet. So continue by drawing a horizontal line across the head shape lower than the middle of the potato shape. This will help us locate the eyes and ear. Add a half circle touching the top and bottom side of the potato shape crossing the eye line. This will help us to locate the side of the head.
Step 5: This one can be a little tricky, so if you aren't happy with your first result don't worry. Just erase what you have done and try it again. You can move on to Step 6 when you're ready.
In this step we're adding the rest of the chin, lips and nose. Notice that the chin is quite high and the lower lip is smaller than the upper one. Also keep in mind that the base of the nose is above the eye line. All the shapes are quite angular. Again, don't worry if you repeat this step till you're satisfied.
Step 6: We'll be doing some more face work in this step. As you can see Guile has quite a prominent brow (giant eyebrow bones) which helps to sell the fact that he is a tough guy ^_^ Begin by drawing the one inside the potato shape. It almost touches the center line on the right and overlaps the side of the head on the left. Draw an eye under it, notice that it sits perfectly on the eye line and has a diamond-like shape.
Next move on to drawing an ear that touches the base of the jaw and the eye line at the top. Now draw the other brow bone on the right beginning from the eye line. Lastly, we'll add a hair line between it and the ear. Don't forget to note that there is a V like shape touching the center line at its peak.
Step 7: Yes we're finally here! Time to draw Guile’s trademark hair! The hair should start on the right and finish at the back of the head just below the eye line. Also, in this step we'll work on his neck. Add a neck line at the back of the head and a more horizontal trapeze line. For the front of the head draw a neck line starting from the place slightly to the right of the bottom edge of his chin. Yes, his neck is huge! I told you he was a badass ^_^
Step 8: Now, for some details. Begin by lightening the construction lines we've drawn so far. If you're using pencil and paper, then just take your kneedable eraser and lighten the construction lines a little bit.
If you're using Photoshop or another drawing software just lighten the layer you're currently working in and create a new layer in which to continue. Just put a little circle in the eye for his iris. Make two lines under the head to suggest the sternocleidomastoid muscles. And lastly, add some details inside his ear, and add some dents and spikes in his haircut on the top and side.
Step 9: Great job so far. We're nearly finished. With all the construction lines in place we can lighten them and draw the final lines. Take a sharp pencil or black pen and draw them while looking at this picture.
If you're using a drawing program just create a new layer and trace the construction lines onto the new layer, then make the underlying layer (the construction line layer) transparent. The shapes are little bit more detailed in comparison to the construction lines, especially in the ear, around the jaw and his hair shape. As for the line quality I tried to embolden some lines, as you can see, at the back of the neck, and the bottom of the chin and nose.
Step 10: I felt there wasn’t enough of a bold line in some places so I added a bit more to the front of the neck, bottom of the jaw and his brow too. I think he looks pretty good now, what do you think?
Step 11: Here we are, we made it! Our final step is to erase all the construction lines. In Photoshop, just make the underlying layer transparent. And we're there!
As always make sure to try to draw Guile again from memory as this will help you remember all the shapes and techniques and will enable you to design your own manga characters in the future. Try it several times till you are confident that you've got a hold of ^_^. This looks like it might be fun to colorize. I may create a photoshop coloring tutorial in the future for Guile so stay tuned!
Draw with passion! ^_^
